Course Description:
This course has two primary components. The first is to learn about Swiss companies engaged in global business (e.g. Nestle, UBS, Credit Suisse, Novartis, Roche, and Swatch), to understand the challenges of having three official languages for marketing (e.g. for packaging), and to think critically about the effects of Switzerland's non-membership of the European Union (e.g. isolation) while, on the other hand, hosting many international organizations, including the Red Cross/Red Crescent, the WTO, and one of the UN's two European offices.
The second is to experience the culture of Switzerland, by visits of Berne, the country's capital, Zurich, Basel and other points of interest; and by experiencing its culture in food (e.g. Swiss fondue), arts (e.g. exhibits at the well known museum Foundation Beyeler in Basel) as well as by visits to historic and archeological sites. Students will keep journals and write an extended reflective essay after the trip to Switzerland.
