Integrative Digital Essay Presentation

Guidelines

Students must prepare a digital presentation on a topic of their own choosing which deals with economic and environmental issues observed in Rome and Italy.  The instructor will provide sample topics if students request them.  The student’s analysis must use economic concepts from the class readings and discussions to explain the cause of the problem and to suggest policies that might help resolve or mitigate the problem.  Historical analysis is encouraged, in which case students will describe how ancient peoples solved or exacerbated environmental problems using economic analysis.  Be careful to define all economic concepts and use them accurately in the analysis.

Students are required to research their topics.  Information should come from several sources – student journals, quotes from the guides and presenters, conversations with local residents and the instructor, research articles, internet information, books on Italy and other typical sources.  Students must identify the sources and provide references and internet links in the project.  Students should use  Microsoft Powerpoint for their presentations during our final two days on campus.  Digital images created in Italy are appropriate to the extent that they make substantive contributions to the presentation.

It is important for students to realize they are responsible to do additional research and analysis beyond the traveling experience in Italy.  The course is not a “travel abroad” course.  It is a “study abroad” course.  Consistent with this research requirement, students should consult the extensive bibliography provided in the links shown above.  These articles are available as pdf documents from the instructor on request.

Additional Sources

An extensive bibliography of additional sources on economic and environmental issues in ancient Rome and medieval Italy is available here.  These articles are available as pdf documents upon request from the instructors.

Students should consider reviewing these additional sources prior to our departure so as to prepare the presentation given the limited time available upon our return.
