The emergent layer of the Rain Forest contains the tallest trees in the Rain Forest.  Trees in the emergent layer grow as high as 200 feet above the forest floor and measure approximately 16 feet around.  The trees are often broad-leaved, hardwood evergreens with leaves with thick, waxy layers and buttress roots to protect itself from the high winds.

Common Animals: Eagles, monkeys, butterflies, insect-eating bats and snakes.
