Nurses engage others in many contexts and need to be aware of the many factors which influence the reasons people seek their help and the form that help takes.

Nursing 220 - Nursing Competencies

In this class I solidified a foundation for providing competent care with a focus on the older adult population. Through the lab and clinical experiences I learned and then put into practice the necessary elements for therapeutic communication and technical skills.  Among many other components, I learned to recognize the physical, psychological, social and developmental factors which contribute to the well-being of older adults.  A particularly useful concept was "knowing, being with and doing for."  This way of looking at nursing practice helped my to focus my approach to clients and promoted compassion and empathy in the provision of care

Nursing 260 - Professional Foundations I

In this class I furthered my understanding of the values of the nursing profession through study of history, philosophy and theories of the profession.  Applying the nursing process to care I am currently providing to my client with history of heart failure as well as class discussions has advanced my knowledge and understanding of why nursing care is provided in the organized way that it is.

Nursing 270 - Health Assessment & Health Promotion

In the health assessment portion of this class I learned more about how the different systems in our bodies normally function versus how they appear when they are functioning abnormally.  This learning was accomplished with in-class discussions, reading of the text and with practical experience from evaluating each other and a client we were assigned to work with in the community.  In the health promotion portion of this class I developed a deeper understanding of the various assessment tools and areas needing education in order to prevent and detect the various threats to the client's and the community's health.
