Buck Lake Excavation

Students embarked on an adventure at the Buck Lake excavation, the first Anthropology Club event of this year.

On Friday, September 12, members of the PLU community trekked to the excavation site.  Their trek was a rigorous two-mile hike up a steady, difficult incline.  Club president Jeanese Hime said branches “whipped their faces” and wet grass “soaked their pant legs.”  However difficult the trek, the mood stayed cheerful, Hime said.

The hike was a small price to pay to visit the site.  After the hike they met archaeologist Greg Burtchard.  Burtchard led the excavation.  The site was beside a “sparkling lake” and one student was “struck instantly” by the magical feeling that filled the camp.  The group observed archeologists removing layers of sediment, screening dirt and looking for artifacts.  The group even tried their hands at the screen.  The group enjoyed the “glorious golden sun” and “enlightening conversations” with archaeologists.

Summing up her experience, Hime said, “this trip proved that anthropology is an extraordinary discipline.”

CHCI Chimposium

The Anthropology Club’s upcoming event is the trip to the Chimpanzee Human Communication Institute.

The institute, at Central Washington University in Ellensburg, Wash., is an extraordinary primatological research center.  On Sunday, October 26, 2008, students will visit chimpanzees Loulis, Tatu and Dar.  Each chimp has the ability to communicate via American Sign Language.  The students will attend a “chimposium,” which consists of a short presentation and viewing of these remarkable chimps.  Former Lute, and past club president, Lindsay Zager will lead the chimposium.  Zager will also be able to answer questions about her research in primatology, internships or graduate school

The club visited CHCI and the chimps last year.  Club advisor Bradford Andrews said, “having them ‘sign’ in front of your eyes it a truly magical and heartening experience.”

On October 26, the van will leave campus around 8 am and return around 5 pm.  The students will attend the 12:30 chimposium.  The van will stop for lunch at a fast food restaurant or students may brown bag lunch.
