English Vertical Team

English Vertical Team

July 19-23, 2010
Monday-Thursday, 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
Friday, 8:30 a.m. - 12:00 noon

Teachers of English 7-12 share common goals for our students, which include confidence and effectiveness with language; skill in critical reading, writing, and thinking; and success in academic endeavors. Students who demonstrate these skills and attributes are more likely to enroll in Honors/Advanced Placement* courses, experience success on Advanced Placement* Tests and Achievement tests such as SAT and ACT, and pursue higher education and success therein.

This course will address the skills to be taught in grades 7-10 in preparation for success in the AP* program for grades 11 and 12, as well as the organization beneficial to establishing a Vertical Team (size, membership, leadership, meetings, possible topics for discussion, and evaluation tools).

Advanced Placement* English should not be an isolated course, but rather a planned program of teaching skills and concepts over several years, and a planned program is best achieved by the vertical cooperation of teachers working together to coordinate their teaching efforts.

This course will provide strategies for all students to learn English content and prepares students to take more challenging coursework. The program does not prescribe curriculum or content for 7-12 English classes, but rather focuses on specific skills and components of any English class regardless of grade level.

We will operate on the principle that success in Honors/Advanced Placement* can be learned/taught by addressing the skills needed for the test. Among these approaches to teaching: tone, syntax, poetry, point of view, and argumentation.

Participants are encouraged to bring texts they use (literature, writing and grammar) and are asked to bring a favorite teaching concept or lesson to share with the group. Time will be provided for groups to work together to plan lessons/strategies they can implement in the classroom.
