COORDINATION OF CARE

» OBJECTIVE:

Collaborate in the design, management, and coordination of care.

What did I learn?

I have worked with fellow nursing students on a variety of nursing projects, worked amongst different levels of nurses and physicians, and outside organizations. These experiences have allowed me to learn to collaborate with others, manage my time, communicate, and use my resources. I have learned my strengths and weaknesses throughout my experiences. I have learned that I am organized, use my time wisely, and like to lead others but I can also be stubborn and not always communicate clearly.  Peer feedback has allowed me to learn these strengths and weaknesses. These skills are not only reflected in my personal life but are apparent in my nursing care.

How did I learn it?

I began to learn these skills while I completed my associate degree and nursing school prerequisites. I learned to manage my time between school, commuting, and work during these two years. Once I entered nursing school at PLU my level of time management increased with each new semester, along with my ability to collaborate and coordinate with others. This is shown in a few group projects; Senior Change Project, Issues Paper, and Teaching Project. For example, my senior change project I was my group’s leader which required me to compromise, delegate, and lead other nursing students throughout the project. I have also refined my skills through my responsibilities as Vice President as Delta Iota Chi, a student-led organization. For instance, one of my roles is  committee contact coordinator, which has allowed me to work on my communication skills. In the clinical setting my ability to coordinate care is shown in my clinical evaluations and care plans.  I learned that health care requires collaboration, a multidisciplinary team, in an effort to provide the best care possible for a patient

How will I continue to use it in the future?

The experiences I have had inside and outside the classroom have greatly impacted my ability to manage, lead, and care for others. I am still learning my weaknesses and strengths with each new role that I take. I will take the information and experiences I have gained thus far in my nursing career and expand on them. I want to continue to provide multidisciplinary care for my patients and educate others on its importance.
