I have
learned to provide and incorporate evidence-based care, which is reflected in my record of clinical practice and clinical journals.
I took a statistics class as a prerequisite into the nursing program , which
provided me with a better understanding of numbers and its importance in the
application. I took the knowledge and insight from that
class and applied it when I took research class in the nursing program. I have learned how to
look at a research article and determine if it is reliable and navigate through
the ‘filler’ information. This class provided me with the necessary tools to find
research and integrate it into practice. My research paper can be
viewed, which illustrates these abilities.
I have
been given a basic understanding of research in the classes mentioned
previously, which has aided me in applying information to support assessments
and interventions in patient care plans. In my nursing courses and prerequisites, I have learned to identify primary sources and evidence-based research to support facts and policies. This last semester, in Health Care
Systems and Policy class, I have learned the role of research in policy
and its importance in opening the door for change. I have learned that research
can help but also hinder change; it is about the context and the timing the
information is presented. Altogether I have learned where to find
evidence-based research, how to apply it into the clinical setting, and how to answer the
‘why’ questions with evidence.
How did I learn it?
I have illustrated my ability
to integrate evidence-based care in numerous projects and papers. For example, I used
research to support my care plan in my senior capstone project. The
project reflects standards of practice and new research on the nurse’s role in
the management of chronic pain in the emergency room patient. My journals show
how I have had questions that have come up in the clinical setting and have
taken the initiative to find research to explain the reasoning behind the
protocol or standard practice. I have
also provided evidence-base care to support the care and management of
kidney stones in my senior seminar project. Furthermore, I have learned how
to conduct research and assess a problem which is illustrated in my senior
change project. My understanding and
integration of evidence-based care is reflected in my clinical evaluations.
How will I continue
to use it in the future?
Evidence-base care is the structural support system in the health care
delivery system. I will continue to incorporate evidence-based care as I transition from
the student nurse into the RN role. I will continue to reflect upon the reason behind
why we do things in the clinical setting and provide answers to those unanswered questions.
