INFLUENCING HEALTH CARE» OBJECTIVE:Participate in processes that influence the health care delivery system
I have learned that there are many
avenues one can take to influence the health care delivery system. I have learned that I can write
letters to their legislator, join a professional organization, participate in
community health-related activities, run for office, or teach others how
they can get their voice heard. I have learned more in the last few months about
influencing health care then I ever thought I would. For instance, I have learned the importance of using
your voice and being educated about health care issues and fighting for your
patients—being an advocate! How
did I learn it? I
began learning about influencing health care in Professional Foundations I. A
group and I created a project that compared Jean Watson and Virginia
Henderson’s nursing theories. The two women were leaders. They advocated
for their patients. Stated at the end of our presentation, “Both
women demonstrate a holistic view point and can agree that the number one
priority for a nurse is the client.” I further learned about being educated about a
topic and addressing controversial issues such as condom distribution to
adolescents in my issues paper and issues presentation. I took part in the
2010 Nurse Lobby Day that took place in February at the Capital. It was
great to learn about current health care issues and the facts surrounding these
issues. This experience was a great introduction into policy, advocacy, and
health care. I have learned to voice my opinion, which is shown in my advocacy
letter to my state representative on Heath Bill 2652; regulating tanning facilities.
I learned how to write a letter to a legislator and state my opinions and facts
in a professional manner. I have also learned how to read a bill and research the
facts associated with the bill, which is reflected in my debate paper. Health
Care Systems and Policy has taught me that a nurse has a huge role in
influencing the health care system because we are on the front line and know our patients
and the care better than anyone else. How will I continue to use it in the future? I want to continue to learn about current health care issues and how to become involved. I want to continue to advocate for my patients. I also want to educate patients, family, friends, and fellow staff members how to become educated about health care topics and how to voice their opinions in an effort to make changes and ultimately influence our health care system for the better. |
