The
interview was conducted using a cassette recorder. A research
copy was also prepared from the original. To further preserve
the content of the interview, it is now being transferred
to compact disc. We deliberately did not transcribe the
entire interview because we want the researchers to listen
to the interviewee's own voice. The transcription index
highlights important aspects of the interview and the
tape counter numbers noted on the Partial Interview
Transcription are meant as approximate finding guides
and refer to the location of a subject on the cassette/CD.

The
partial interview transcription highlights important aspects
of the interview. Numbers on the left may be used as guides
to important subjects. Two numbers separated by a slash indicate
that the first number is for cassette and the second for CD.
075 Marie has been president of the Daughters of Norway five
times, one or two years each time. (Since this interview took
place on May 17, syttende mai is discussed.) The large celebration
is held in Normanna Hall every year, but the lodge has a special
program.
Activities of the lodge are next discussed: food classes, Mayfest,
syttende mai, mid-summernight's eve, cookbook.
131 FOOD CLASSES: Florence Buck began this program two years
ago. The class is held from 10-12 every Thursday morning for
five weeks before Christmas and Easter. The class is open to
anyone interested. Foods, like lefse, berlinerkranse, fattigmann,
julekake, potetkake, are made by various volunteers with student
participation; after preparation, the food is served for lunch.
This is the only Norwegian food course being taught in the area.
Recipes come from the Daughters of Norway cookbook. Most of
the recipes are original, like the old ones.
254 MAYFEST AND SYTTENDE MAI.: Syttende mai (May 17) has been
celebrated in Tacoma since before 1912. The program consisting
of a "barnetog" - childrens parade - is the main emphasis with
Norwegian refreshments following in Normanna Hall.
The Mayfest is held at Pacific Lutheran University in the spring;
the lodge people bring in Norwegian food and exhibits of Norwegian
arts.
315 MID-SUMMERNIGHT'S EVE: The lodges celebrate this in late
June in Normanna Hall. There is a program and refreshments,
and it's open to the public.
Normanna Hall has recently been remodeled and is very convenient
and lovely again.
Planned events are advertised in the Tacoma News Tribune, although
coverage hasn't been as good in later years.
368 Daughters of Norway cookbook.
374 End of tape.
