University of Washington Scandinavian Archives The Scandinavian Archives at the University of Washington was begun prior to 1958 in conjunction with a general program to strengthen the Library's Scandinavian Holdings. Records were collected by Professor Walter Johnson of the university's Scandinavian Studies Department, and Harry Fabbe, publisher of the Swedish language newspaper Svenska Posten. Fabbe solicited records through his newspaper, resulting in donations primarily from the Swedish community. For several years, beginning in 1972, library staff members Emma Nelson and Clinton Hyde worked to broaden the archival holdings related to the Norwegian, Danish and Icelandic communities, primarily in Seattle. During 1975-1976 the Emigrantinstitutet in Växjö, Sweden collaborated with the library on a project to microfilm Swedish-American church records in the Northwest.
