Therapeutic Conversation

NURS 220 gave me the opportunity participate in my first clinical environment, which was at a local nursing home.  Among many of the memorable moments, one of the stand outs was a therapeutic conversation I had with an 84 year old woman.  I was able to write about the conversation, along with some of my thoughts regarding the conversation.  My writings can be viewed using the link below.

Personal Reflections:  Although this therapeutic conversation was initiated as an assignment from my instructor, I was so thankful to have the experience and did not feel as though I was simply fulfilling a task for a grade.  It truly was my first opportunity to apply what I had learned in a classroom setting to a clinical setting.  I found that I was nervous, and did not feel completely natural or comfortable with the patient, but that I was using what I had learned and learning from my mistakes and insecurities.  I was honestly a little jolted that caring as a nurse did not come easily to me, but it was also reassurance to me to learn that nurses can make a difference in the lives of others with small deeds and actions.

Future objectives and additions: Once I have completed NURS 430 - Situations with communities, I intend to add more to this page. I will use my experiences and personal growth to further define my definition and philosophy of nursing.

Definition of Nursing

Nursing is defined differently by almost anyone defining it.  This could be because everyone has had different experiences with nurses or as nurses, or it could simply be a perception of the role a nurse should have.  My personal definition of nursing is having a role which promotes and sustains optimal health and quality of life.  Nursing provides an advocacy for the patient, where therapy and treatment combines medical competence and holistic care.

Philosophy of Nursing

My personal philosophy of nursing encompasses the values and beliefs which I hold dear along with the respect and acceptance of the values and beliefs of others. This philosophy incorporates the different aspects of nursing and how they apply to my life as well as the significant impact they will have on my role as a nurse.  To devlop my philosophy of nursing, I used the following worksheet.
