Lutes’ Arizona Struggles Continue as Cal Lutheran Wins, 7-1

Game Linescore

Tyler Green - two mores hits for PLU

ANTHEM, Ariz. – A pair of California Lutheran pitchers limited Pacific Lutheran to just four hits as the Kingsmen dumped the Lutes, 7-1, on Friday’s second day of the Arizona Desert Classic.

Pacific Lutheran’s offensive woes continued for a second consecutive day following the Lutes’ 7-2 defeat to Redlands on Thursday. And for the second straight game, the Lutes’ only real offensive threat was provided by Jordan Post and Tyler Green. Both players had a double and single against Redlands, and on this day they had back-to-back hits leading to PLU’s only run.

Post led off the fifth inning with a double to right field, and he moved up a base on a single by Green. Post scored on a groundout by Brandon Sales, but that was it for Pacific Lutheran, which managed only six base runners during the game.

By the time it scored, Pacific Lutheran already trailed 5-0 after giving up five unearned runs in the first inning. A leadoff error led to a two-run double and a two-run homer, both coming with two outs. Cal Lutheran later added single tallies in the fifth and sixth innings to wrap up the victory.

Brett Brunner was Pacific Lutheran’s hard-luck loser, allowing six runs, only one of which was earned, in five innings. He struck out five and allowed six hits.

Green, who had a pair of singles, was the only PLU player with more than one hit. Besides Post, Ryan Thorne had the other PLU safety, a single in the fourth inning.

Danny Caldwell pitched the first six innings for Cal Lutheran to pick up his first decision of the season. Mike Roe pitched three hitless innings to finish off the Lutes. Mike Young hit a pair of homers for the winners.

The Arizona Desert Classic continues for Pacific Lutheran on Saturday when it plays the Whittier Poets at 10 a.m.
