CREW: Four PLU Rowers Invited to Participate
in Select Summer Camps
Four Pacific Lutheran rowers have been invited to attend select
summer rowing camps that are held to help identify potential rowers
for the U.S. national rowing team.
Juniors Amber Iverson and Kat Jenkins and freshman Audra Stafford
have been invited to attend the six-week Austin Rowing Camp -
Royal Canadian Henley '08, in Austin, Tex. The three Lute rowers
will be competing for seats on U.S. boats that will compete in
the Royal Canadian Henley ’08 Regatta later this summer.
Information on the camp’s web site states, “The target
audience is men and women with collegiate rowing experience in
the upper levels of their programs.”
Senior Justin Hull has been invited to Riverside Boat Club in
Boston to compete for selection for the men’s national team
lightweight 8. The camp invites only 20 rowers every summer to
compete for these coveted spots. Hull will join a list of several
past PLU rowers invited to the same camp. That list includes Eric
Hansen in 1988, current PLU head coach Tone Lawver from 1995-98,
coxswain Sami Berube in 1995 and coxswain Lindsay Taylor in 2007.
“The camp system is there to provide an opportunity for
athletes to really see what their true potential is when put into
a situation where they’re no longer the fastest individual
or the biggest girl or guy on a team,” said coach Lawver.
“Hopefully they will learn some valuable training work habits
that will carry over into next year’s team.”
