A two-time first team All-Northwest
Conference wide receiver, Craig Chiado enters his senior year
as a preseason All-America candidate. The New Mexico native has
compiled 118 catches for 2,007 yards with 14 touchdowns in three
seasons.
Describe
any hardships or extenuating circumstances that you have faced to
to get to where you are today.
Athletically, I have had to overcome injury. My redshirt
freshman year I spent a week in the hospital with a staph infection
on my knee. My redshirt sophomore year I dislocated my shoulder
and tore my labrum. I had surgery and had to rehab, although it
was very painful.
What were the major contributing factors
in your decision to attend Pacific Lutheran University?
I had a good senior season in high school and I knew I
wanted to play football at the next level. Then I met (former PLU
head coach) Frosty (Westering). My cousin also attended PLU and
I knew I could get a great education while playing football in a
positive and encouraging environment.
How has your family helped to get you where
you are athletically?
I am very blessed to be playing football at PLU and I offer all
my thanks directly to my parents and my family. They have supported
me athletically ever since I was young. They came to all my games
growing up, and not a lot has changed. However, rather than a 10-minute
car ride they travel three hours by plane every week to watch me
play. They are my biggest supporters and I love them very much.
If you have studied abroad, describe your
experience.
This past J-Term I traveled to Italy with the Money and
Banking class. It was one of the greatest experiences of my life
and the best part about it was that I traveled with four of my best
friends, three of them football players.
What
has been your favorite class at PLU?
Intermediate Accounting II. I didn't particularly
like the class but it challenged me and I learned more in that class
than in any of my other classes. I also liked History of Jazz, but
for the opposite reason.
What are your plans after college?
I am looking forward to getting a job in either
the accounting or finance field.
Has it been difficult to balance athletics
with academics?
Yes and no. I haven’t had too many problems
balancing the two but many of my business classes involve working
with teams and it makes it a little difficult to find time to meet.
Apart from that if I’m not on the practice field there is
more than a good chance that I am either in a study room in Morken
or on the third floor in the library.
When your athletic career is all said and
done, what is it that you would want people to say about you?
That I was as good of a person off the field as on it, or that they
never saw me give up.
Describe your hometown and what you miss
most about it.
Albuquerque, New Mexico is a wonderful city
even though it gets mistaken for Mexico more often than not. It’s
warm most the year and hardly ever rains. I miss seeing my family,
but most off all I miss the food.
What is your favorite place on campus?
I would have to go with my second home - Morken.
What is your favorite restaurant in Tacoma?
Famous Dave’s
What song is playing on your ipod before
a game?
Eminem - ‘Til I Collapse.
