Kelly Totten is one of those
football players that you seldom notice until he does something
wrong - he's an offensive lineman. Mostly, Totten does things
right, which is why he earned first team All-Northwest Conference
honors last season and why he is a strong candidate for the same
honor this season.
Describe
your family. How have they helped you in your athletic career?
My mom, Terry, and dad, Tracy, have been my biggest fans
since I was a child. Both being former PLU athletes, they know what
it’s like to balance an academic, athletic, social and work
life. They have always made it to my games and supported me no matter
how well or bad I played. My brother, Cory, prepared me for many
battles. He used to gang up with his friends and beat me up, call
me names, and wrestle me into submission. Eventually I got bigger
and we became really great friends.
Describe any hardships or extenuation circumstances
that you have faced to get to where you are today.
I have been fairly fortunate. I come
from a stable family and am blessed with great friends. I had a
small rebel streak in high school, which got me arrested, but my
probation officer always knew I would turn out okay.
What made you decide to come to PLU?
I only applied a few places. I had some interest from the
Naval Academy but did not like the idea of the government deciding
the next 10 years of my life. PLU was the right size for me, the
right distance away from home, and had a football program that really
intrigued me. On my official PLU visit, the deciding factor was
that I played Halo until 5 a.m. with my host (former player and
now coach David LaSalata). I thought that was really cool.
Have you studied abroad? If so, describe
your experiences?
Technically it wasn’t really “studying
abroad.” I took a trip to Europe with some housemates last
January and saw Germany, Italy, Switzerland, Austria, Spain and
France. However, we managed to find some PLU students in Italy who
were abroad during J-term and crashed in their hotel. Although not
technically an educational trip, I definitely learned a lot about
myself, my friends and cheap living.
What has been your favorite class at PLU?
My favorite class was a digital photography
art course. It wasn’t just point and shoot; it was about using
post-production photo editing programs to create strange and unrealistic
worlds and beings from our photographs. It really took a lot of
imagination and time, but in the end I made some really cool projects.
Have you had any trouble balancing athletics
with academics?
PLU is not an easy school. In the School of Business my work is
mostly group work on large semester-long projects. With the time
commitment needed for football, it has always made scheduling team
meetings and getting homework done a challenge. Looking back I have
always gotten my work done, but at the expense of much-needed sleep.
What are you plans after college?
I would love to just travel for a little while. I am not ready to
be an adult. My last five years have been on fast forward and so
busy I would just like to decompress for a while. The plans after
that are pretty open. I would love to work for an advertising agency
or in the marketing department of some sweet company.
When your athletic career is all said and
done, what is it that you would want people to say about you?
I want people to say that I was a leader that
didn’t have to say much.
Describe your hometown and what you miss
about it the most.
Arcadia is a suburb of Los Angeles just a
few miles east of Pasadena. What I miss most about home is the view
of the foothills behind my house. We live at the base of the San
Gabriel Mountains. On long drives home from PLU I’ve literally
come to tears at the sight of them because they mean I am home.
What's your favorite spot on campus?
I’ve always liked the fitness center.
What is your favorite restaurant in Tacoma?
Ruby Tuesday: A monument to decadence.
Ultimate Colossal Burger 1800 calories
French Fries 200 calories
Chocolate Tall Cake 800 calories
What music is playing in your ipod right
now?
I have always been a sucker for Jack Johnson
and I will always have a man crush on Kenny Chesney.
