PLU Men Place Second at NWC Golf Championships

BLUE RIVER, Ore. - Second place was the order of the day for the Pacific Lutheran men's golf team at the Northwest Conference Championships that ended on Monday at Tokatee Golf Club.

Whitworth successfully defended its NWC championship, shooting 295 in the final round and finishing with a 54-hole total of 870. PLU placed second, carding a 300 on Monday to finish at 889. Rounding out the scoring were Linfield 904, Pacific 910, Puget Sound 922, Willamette 935, Whitman 962, and Lewis & Clark 1000.

In addition to the team placing second, two Pacific Lutheran players tied for second, one stroke off the pace set by medalist Steven Johnson of Whitworth. Johnson shot a final-round 76 on Monday to go with his 36-hole score of 142 on Sunday. He finished the tournament with a 54-hole total of 218. PLU senior Brian Misterek, the 2004 conference medalist and the co-leader after the first day with Johnson, shot a 77 on Monday and finished with a 219. Misterek's teammate, junior Jason Casey, had a sizzling 71 on Monday and finished the tournament tied with Misterek for second at 219. Misterek's scorecard showed 75-67-77 - 219, while Casey carded 74-74-71 - 219.

The leader board had a distinct Whitworth and PLU flavor to it. Whitworth's Andrew Parrot carded a 221, followed by PLU's Chris Packard and Whitworth's Patrick Dorsing and Sean Thompson at 222. Packard shot 75-74-73 - 222.

Rounding out the PLU scoring were CJ Stauffer with 85-73-79 - 237, Barrett Stamps with 77-79-82 - 238 and Kyle Spitzer with 79-82-79 - 240.

In the points race to determine the overall season champion, Whitworth won with 26.5 points, followed by Linfield with 23.5 and Pacific Lutheran with 19. Rounding out the scoring were Pacific with 16, Puget Sound 15, Willamette and Whitman 4 each, and Lewis & Clark 0. The point totals are based on results from the NWC Fall Classic, the NWC Spring Classic and the Northwest Conference Championships.
