TACOMA, Wash. – Lewis & Clark stayed in the hunt for
the Northwest Conference men’s basketball regular season title
by defeating Pacific Lutheran, 59-55, on Friday night in PLU’s
Olson Auditorium.
The Pioneers, who won for the seventh time in the past nine games,
improved to 8-3 in the Northwest Conference and to 13-6 overall.
Pacific Lutheran dropped its fourth straight game and is now 4-8
in the conference and 7-12 overall.
Lewis & Clark extended a 25-18 halftime lead to a 12-point
advantage, 32-20, on David Berggren’s three-point field goal
about 2 ½ minutes into the second half. The visitors from
Portland still led by nine points, 51-42, on a pair of free throws
by Jeff Christensen with 4:12 remaining in the game.
The Lutes battled back with a 13-5 run, highlighted by a trio of
three-point baskets by Lawrence
Brooks. The final of the treys pulled the Lutes to
within a point, 56-55, with 39.6 seconds showing on the clock.
Lewis & Clark then held the ball for almost the entirety of
the 35-second shot clock before Mark Robinowitz took a pass from
Gene Rivera and buried a three-point shot from deep in the left
corner, wrapping up the victory.
After shooting a horrific 18 percent on 5-of-28 from the field
in the opening 20 minutes, it was a surprise that the Lutes were
even in the game at the end. What pulled them back into it was 56
percent accuracy on 15-of-27 shooting in the second half. Included
in that marksmanship was a 6-of-10 performance from beyond the three-point
line. Brooks hit his three late and Kurt
Oliver hit three early in the half to keep the Lutes
in the game.
Robinowitz scored 11 points and Berggren added 10 as eight of the
nine Pioneers who played scored in the game.
For Pacific Lutheran, Scott
McDaniels had another strong game with 17 points and
11 rebounds, while Jared
Brandeberry grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds and scored
nine points.
