Second-Half Surge Carries
Wildcats Past Lutes, 89-78

McMINNVILLE, Ore. - Linfield surged ahead by 23 points
halfway through the second period and held off a furious Pacific
Lutheran rally to defeat the Lutes, 89-78, in a Northwest Conference
men's basketball game played Friday night at Ted Wilson Gymnasium.
With the win, Linfield improves to 9-6 overall and 5-2 in NWC play.
PLU now sits at 8-7 overall and 4-3 in the NWC.
In an unconventional first half, the Wildcats were able to put
up 44 points while shooting 39 percent and being held scoreless
till the 16:35 mark. By outrebounding PLU, 23-18, and forcing 11
turnovers, Linfield was able to attempt 17 more shots than its opponent.
Erik Olson came out firing from long range, going 3-of-4 from three-point
territory while picking up 15 first-half points. Linfield led at
halftime, 44-35.
The ‘Cats came out of the locker room clicking on all cylinders
as they ran their lead out to 68-45 with 11:32 to play.
Slowly but surely the Lutes crawled back into the game, finally
pulling the deficit to single digits at 80-72 with 2:05 to play.
PLU wouldn’t get any closer as a Steve Taylor score and two
Bubba Lemon free throws extended the Wildcat lead out to 12.
K.C. Wiser, who sat out the last two games with a knee injury,
proved to be the difference in the Linfield offense as the Wildcats
bounced back from their worst offensive game of the season last
week by putting up 89 points against a quality PLU squad.
The Wildcats shot 47.8 percent for the game and the Lutes shot
at a 48.3 percent clip. The difference was the three-point shooting,
with the Wildcats going 8-of-19 and the Lutes converting just 5-of-21
attempts. Inside, the ‘Cats dominated the glass, winning the
rebound war 40-33.
Landon Heidenreich led the Lutes with a season-high 22 points while
Scott McDaniels helped out with 21 and Kyle MacTaggart scored 14
off the bench. McDaniels and Josh Dressler led the Lutes with six
rebounds apiece.
Wiser scored 20 points to lead the Wildcats, who also got 17 from
Taylor, 16 from Olson, 14 from Brian Murphy and10 from Cody Tesoro.
