Concordia Defeats Pacific Lutheran, 2-1,
on Late Goal
Statistics
TACOMA – Kossivi Alokpovi beat Pacific
Lutheran goalkeeper Andrew Croft from about 15 yards out on right
side as the Concordia Cavaliers defeated the host Lutes, 2-1, in
a non-conference men’s soccer match on Sunday afternoon.
Alokpovi turned a long clearance down the
right wing into the winning goal with 3:47 remaining, using his
speed to get around one defender before hitting a right-footed rocket
past Croft before the sophomore goalkeeper had a chance to get his
hands up.
Concordia, which improved its record to
1-1-1, dominated the first half, out-shooting the hosts 9-2. The
Cavaliers got on the board first at the 19:13 mark when Steve Pirotte
found Mirzet Sacirovic on the left side with a long diagonal ball.
Sacirovic hit a left-footed blast into the net from 15 yards. Later
in the half, Croft made a spectacular reaction save on Tyler Camp’s
shot from 10 yards away.
Pacific Lutheran, playing its first counting match of the season,
found its legs in the final 45 minutes. Putting pressure on the
Concordia defense, the Lutes tied the score at 80:55 on Mike Ferguson’s
shot from just inside the penalty box. Ferguson took a pass from
Mattis Ostvold and hit a first-time left-footer past keeper Mike
Selmo.
The Lutes return to action next weekend with a pair of matches
in Colorado Springs, Colo. On Friday, the Lutes play host Colorado
College, and on Saturday they battle Buena Vista (Iowa).
