Pacific Lutheran won its fifth straight men’s soccer match
on Sunday, defeating the visiting Simon Fraser University Clan,
2-0, in a non-conference contest.
The Lutes, now 5-1 for the season, used a familiar “recipe”
in taking the victory. They shut out their opponent for the fifth
consecutive match, and forward Mike Ferguson and Baard Asker both
scored goals.
Ferguson scored his third goal in as many matches and his fifth
of the season 29:21 into the match, knocking in the rebound of Asker’s
shot. The goal came despite Simon Fraser having the upper hand in
the early going. The Clan was unlucky not to score first when a
25-yard right-footed rocket by Nathan Quan hit the left post at
the 20:01 mark of the first half.
Asker scored his team-leading sixth goal of the season at 62:59,
taking the ball away from the defense deep in the Simon Fraser end
and beating goalkeeper Thomas Lindley with a rolling shot. Asker,
a freshman from Oslo, Norway, has scored four goals in the last
three matches.
The Clan responsed with increased offensive pressure and seemed
ready to draw within a goal with 6:35 remaining in the contest,
but PLU goalkeeper Andrew Croft made a spectacular diving save of
Liam Miller’s shot headed for the left side of the net.
When the final whistle sounded, Croft and his defensive teammates
had their fifth straight shutout.
