Match Statistics
Mike Ferguson’s second goal of the match came in the first
overtime, giving the host Pacific Lutheran Lutes a 3-2 Northwest
Conference men’s soccer victory over the George Fox Bruins
on Saturday.
Ferguson, a junior
forward, took a free kick from about 25 yards out on the right side.
He hit the ball with the outside of his right foot, bending it around
the defensive wall and into the upper left corner of the goal, giving
George Fox goalkeeper Jake Maguire no chance at a save.
With the win, the Lutes improve to 9-5-1 for the season and to
6-3-1 in the conference. The loss drops George Fox to 6-7-2 overall
and to 2-7-1 in the conference.
After a scoreless first half, Ferguson put the Lutes on the board
first in the 58th minute. Henrik
Oiseth started the play with a pass to Erik
Gracey, who crossed from the wing to Ferguson, who struck with
his left foot from eight yards out.
The Lutes increased their lead to 2-0 on Oiseth’s first goal
of the season in the 65th minute. A long throw in by Derek
Karamatic went to Gracey, who flicked the ball to Oiseth. The
Norwegian midfielder hit a half volley from 20 yards out beat Maguire.
The Bruins got back in the match in the 73rd minute when Garrett
Blizzard scored on a header from about four yards out, and they
knotted the score at 2-2 on Kyle Story’s goal in the 88th
minute. Story took Blizzard's long pass on the left side, touched
the ball to his right foot and bent a shot around PLU goalkeeper
Andrew Croft.
That set up Ferguson’s match-winning tally in overtime.
