Lutes Win Second Straight, Shut Out Simpson

PARKLAND, Wash. - The Lutes finished off a weekend sweep with a
3-0 win over the Simpson College Storm at PLU field on Sunday, improving
their record to 2-4.
Senior forward Mike Ferguson led the Lutes with three goals over
the weekend, including two against Simpson. Ferguson started off
the scoring for the Lutes with a right-footed shot from 10 yards
out only 1:24 into the match, assisted by junior midfielder Andy
Stolz. Senior midfielder Erik Gracey put up the Lutes’ second
point with 12 minutes left in the first half on a left-footed kick
from the right side of the goal. Ferguson scored his second goal
at the 88:10 mark with another strike from the left side.
Freshman goalkeeper Daniel Mangum recorded two saves in his second
straight shutout since taking over the starting role. He has been
in goal for both of the Lutes’ wins this season.
The Lutes out-shot the Storm 20-5 for the match, and held a huge
8-1 advantage in corner kicks. Simpson goalkeeper Josh Youngman
recorded eight saves as the Lutes consistently attacked the goal.
The Lutes return to action September 22, taking on the Pacific
Boxers in Forest Grove, Ore., at 2:30 p.m.
