Lutes Sweeps Whitworth in Men’s Tennis Match

TACOMA, Wash. – Pacific Lutheran improved its Northwest Conference men’s tennis record to 12-2 and its overall mark to 12-9 by sweeping two matches from the visiting Whitworth Pirates on a sunny Friday afternoon at the PLU courts. The Pirates are now 4-9 in the conference and 4-14 overall this season.

In the first match, the Lutes dropped only seven games in winning the three doubles matches. David Miller and Justin Larimore rolled to an 8-1 victory over Ed Anegon and Scott Bourne at No. 1 to lead the charge. Also winning were the teams of Justin Peterson and Jeff Loranger at No. 2 and Jared Vidano and John DeMars at No. 3.

In singles action, the Lutes swept all six points in straight sets. Playing singles in the first match for PLU were Miller, Larimore, Peterson, Jamie Crosetto, Vidano and DeMars.

After a break, the teams returned to the courts with PLU sporting a number of lineup changes. Peterson and Loranger moved up to No. 1 and garnered an 8-1 victory, and twins Alex and Drew Eli came out on top at No. 3, 8-5. Whitworth picked up its first point of the day with a close 9-8 win for Michael Carlson and Kellen Oetgen over Tyler Ochsner and Jared Vidano.

In singles, Loranger moved up to No. 1 from his usual No. 3 spot and was impressive in a 6-1, 6-0 victory. Peterson, Crosetto and Ochsner won the other singles matches. Ochsner, a senior playing his final match at home, fought off cramps while gutting out a three-set victory at No. 6 singles. Following the match he fell to his knees and kissed the court.
