TUCSON, Ariz. - Sophomore Theresa Tauscher had three home runs
- including a pair of grand slams - and two doubles among eight
hits to lead Pacific Lutheran to a trio of softball wins on Saturday
at the Tucson Invitational.
The Lutes defeated St. Joseph's College (NY) 12-0, then swept a
doubleheader from St. Olaf (Minn.), 9-0 and 13-0, all games ending
after five innings because of the eight-run rule. With the wins,
the Lutes improve their season record to 9-4.
Tauscher, a sophomore out of Auburn Riverside High School, made
a position switch from shortstop to centerfield during practice
this week. Her big day at the plate might be coincidental with the
defensive move, but it was huge no matter how you view it. In the
three games, Tauscher went 8-for-9 with the three homers and two
doubles, drove in 13 runs and scored five more.
Her offensive explosion came in support of the strong pitching
efforts of freshmen Hadley Schmitt and Cassie Canales. Schmitt picked
up victories against Mt. St. Joseph and St. Olaf, striking out 14
batters while walking none and giving up just three hits in eight
innings. Canales had the other win against St. Olaf.
The Lutes were originally scheduled to play just the doubleheader
against St. Olaf but picked up the other game after two games scheduled
for Friday were rained out. The Lutes take Sunday off, then conclude
their appearance in the Tucson Invitational on Monday with games
against Eastern Oregon and, again, versus St. Olaf.
