Vanguard Sweeps Twinbill From Pacific Lutheran

Game One
Game Two

Sheila Reiten - three hits in twinbill

COSTA MESA, Calif. – Vanguard University, ranked No. 8 in NAIA softball, collected 21 hits to sweep a non-conference doubleheader from Pacific Lutheran, 5-0 an 8-2, on Saturday afternoon.

The Lions jumped on PLU pitcher Hadley Schmitt for four runs on four hits and an error and in the first inning of the opening game. The final run came in the fourth inning on two more Vanguard hits.

Pacific Lutheran managed five hits in the game, though no player had more than one safety. Carly Starke had a double for the Lutes’ only extra base hit.

In the second game, the Lutes scored a run in the first inning when Heather Walling singled and scored on Starke’s two-out double. Vanguard responded with three runs on three hits and a walk against PLU starter and loser Rachel Wheeler-Hoyt. PLU came right back with another run in the second as Wheeler-Hoyt led off with a double and eventually scored on Beth Haahr’s sacrifice fly.

The Lions put the game away with four runs in the third inning and they added another tally in the fifth.

Pacific Lutheran had eight hits in the game, with Sheila Reiten collecting a pair of singles. Reiten had three hits in today’s doubleheader to go along with three base hits in Friday’s split with Concordia.

The Lutes don't play again until Feb. 23 when they travel to Lacey for a non-conference doubleheader against Saint Martin's.
