Bailey Leads the Way on First Day of Competition

WALLA WALLA, Wash. – The Pacific Lutheran swimming teams
competed in Friday's first day of the Northwest Conference swim
meet hosted by Whitman College.
The Pacific Lutheran men are in fifth place after the first of
three days of competition. The men's team scores look like this:
Linfield 185, Puget Sound 158, Whitworth 156, Whitman 107, Pacific
Lutheran 95, Willamette 86, Lewis & Clark 76, Pacific 6.
The Lute women currently sit in sixth place after the opening day.
The women's team scores came out like this: Whitworth 212, Puget
Sound 199, Lewis & Clark 120, Whitman 107, Linfield 99, Pacific
Lutheran 64, Pacific 57, Willamette 33.
The highlight of the day for PLU came from freshman Mica
Bailey, who placed second in the 50
freestyle in a time of 25.14. Bailey swam a season best 25.07 earlier
that day in the prelims. The other Lute on the women’s side
to make it to the finals was fellow freshman Jessie
Donovan, who placed sixth in the 200 individual medley
in a time of 2:17.12.
The men’s team had a pair of finalists as well. Andy
Stetzler placed third in the 500 freestyle in a time
of 4:48.70. Stetzler’s time was almost a 10-second seasonal
best. Luke
Weinbrecht also swam a season best of 22.39 in the
50 freestyle, good for seventh place.
The Lutes also had a number of relays compete today. The top Lute
finish was fourth in the men’s 400 medley relay. The team
of David Pedack,
Jason Hesla,
Matthew Kim
and Stetzler raced to a time of 3:45.07, a season best.
The Lutes return to the pool tomorrow at 10 a.m. for day two of
Northwest Conference swimming action.
