Klauder, Jones Named Most Outstanding Swimmers

A pair of first-year Pacific Lutheran swimmers were selected by
their teammates as the Lutes’ outstanding swimmers as announced
at the team banquet on Sunday, Feb. 24.
Jessie Klauder, a freshman from Mazama High School in Klamath Falls,
Ore., earned recognition as the Outstanding Female Swimmer, while
Jay Jones, a freshman from Mountain View High School in Vancouver,
Wash., received the Outstanding Male Swimmer honor.
Other award winners included Alyssa Zakrzewski and John Pedack,
named the most improved swimmers, and Tara Johnson, Andy Stetzler
and Michael Turcott, selected as the most inspirational swimmers.
Klauder had the top event finish for the PLU women at the Northwest
Conference Championships, placing third in the 200 breaststroke.
She also placed sixth in the 400 individual medley and ninth in
the 500 freestyle.
Jones provided Pacific Lutheran’s primary highlight at the
conference meet, winning the 200 butterfly in a time of 1:56.61.
The victory by Jones was PLU’s first NWC men’s individual
event title since 1999. On the meet’s first day, Jones finished
fourth in the 200
individual medley final with a time of 1:57.05, breaking the school
record of 1:57.85 set by Mike Simmons in 1997. Jones also placed
third in the 400 individual medley.
