SWIMMING: Lutes Open Season With Two Weekend
Events
THIS WEEK: Pacific Lutheran at NWC Sprint Pentathlon,
Walla Walla, Wash., Friday, 5 p.m.; PLU at NWC Relays, Walla Walla,
Wash., Saturday, 11 a.m.
LUTES OPEN COMPETITIVE SEASON: The Pacific Lutheran
swimming teams open their 2007-08 season this weekend in Walla Walla
with a pair of events hosted by Whitman College. At 5 p.m. on Friday,
the Lutes go against other Northwest Conference teams at the NWC
Sprint Pentathlon. Swimmers compete in the “sprint”
version of the freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly and
individual medley, and their combined times determine their place
compared to other swimmers. For instance, current PLU sophomore
Jessie Donovan placed third in the women’s division last year
with a combined time of 3:00.83. Her time was 2.2 seconds behind
the combined time of Whitworth’s Brittany Gresset. The following
day, PLU and the other teams return to the Whitman College pool
for the NWC Relays, a relay-only competition. That event gets underway
at 11 a.m.
DUAL MEET SCHEDULE GETS UNDERWAY: The dual meet
portion of Pacific Lutheran’s schedule gets underway in earnest
during the first weekend of November when the Lutes take on the
Puget Sound Loggers in a Northwest Conference dual. The meet is
scheduled for a 6 p.m. start on Nov. 2 at the UPS pool, though there
is a possibility that the meet could be moved to the PLU pool. The
following weekend, the Lutes swim at Pacific on Friday and at Linfield
on Saturday in conference events.
