TRACK & FIELD: Lutes Compete at UPS Open Prior to Spring Break

THIS WEEK: Pacific Lutheran competes at the UPS Open on Friday, March 23. The meet starts at 2 p.m.

LUTES AT UPS: The Lutes will make a cross-town trip to Baker Stadium to compete at the UPS Open on Friday afternoon. A total of 16 women and 14 men will be competing for the Lutes. This will be the team’s last opportunity to compete until after Spring Break when the Lutes will head back to UPS for the Shotwell Invitational. PLU was originally scheduled to compete March 30-31 at the WOU Open hosted by Western Oregon University in Monmouth, Ore., but the schedule was changed because of Spring Break.

LAST WEEK: At the PLU Invitational, Pacific Lutheran’s first home meet in nearly three seasons, PLU had a pair of winners on the men’s side. Junior James Burnett won the 100-meter dash in a time of 11.22, and sophomore Doug Rickabaugh had a 165-5 winning mark in the javelin. For the women, freshman Katie Choate and sophomore Michele Hegg finished first and second in the women’s 1500-meter run, clocking 4:58.10 and 4:59.63, respectively. Senior Megan Wochnick started her outdoor season by winning the women's hammer throw with a NCAA national meet provisional qualifying mark of 153-2. Lute freshman Karen Hatch took the javelin with a toss of 121-4.

OTHER HIGHLIGHTS: Adam Midles, a senior competing for the University of Southern California, set a PLU field record with a 225-2 mark in the men’s hammer throw. This is the first time for Midles, an Olympia native, to throw in his home state. He defeated a pair of University of Washington throwers, one of whom is his younger brother Zack.
