Track Kicks off Season at Linfield Icebreaker
THIS WEEK: The Pacific Lutheran track and field
team will be competing at the Linfield Icebreaker this Saturday
at 9 a.m.
ABOUT THE ICEBREAKER: The Linfield Icebreaker
will be the first outdoor competition for the Lutes this season.
The meet will feature a number of NWC teams as well as D-II and
NAIA schools. More information can be found at http://www.linfield.edu/sports/sport/sport.php?sport=tr.
SPRINT HEAVY: In a program that is historically
full of powerful throwers and strong distance runners, the 2007
team will have a plethora of experienced sprinters. Guided by third
year sprint coach Michael Waller the Lutes return six sprinters
who qualified for the Northwest Conference championships last year
including the defending women’s 4x100 relay team. On the men’s
side James Burnett and Luke Weinbrecht will lead the way. Both qualified
for the conference meet in the 100-meter dash with Burnett placing
third and Weinbrecht just missing a spot in the final by .01 seconds.
The women’s side should be one the top sprinting groups in
the conference. The reigning conference champion 4x100 relay team
returns all four runners. Juniors Jeva Morton and Lynette Millard
and sophomores Amy Lebrun and Faven Araya will hope to return to
the top of the pack this season. Individually Lebrun placed third
in both the 100-meter and 200-meter dash while Morton finished fifth
in the 100 and seventh in the 200.
UP NEXT: The Lute faithful will have a chance
to watch the PLU thinclads compete at home for the first time since
2003. The Lutes will host the PLU invitational on March 17. The
meet is scheduled to start at 10 a.m.
