TRACK & FIELD: Lutes Head to Oregon For Two Meets

THIS WEEK: The Pacific Lutheran track team travels to Oregon to take part in two meets. Friday the Lutes will compete at the Charles Bowles Invitational hosted by Willamette, and Saturday PLU will attend the Oregon Preview hosted by the University of Oregon.

NWC HONORS: Two PLU athletes were honored last week for their outstanding performances. Faven Araya was named the Northwest Conference female track athlete of the week and Taylor Hacker was named Northwest Conference female field athlete of the week. Araya won the 400 hurdles at the Peyton Invite with an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 1:03.90. She also ran the 100 hurdles (15.83) and was part of the Lutes’ 4x100 relay (49.78). Hacker set a Baker Stadium record and earned a strong provisional qualifying mark in the hammer with a winning throw of 167’-10”. She also finished 2nd in the shot put (37’-11.5”) and tossed the discus (93’-11”).

WEST REGION HONORS: A pair of Lutes picked up West Region honors last week when the United States Track and Field Cross Country Coaches Association announced the All-Region team. Junior Taylor Hacker was named west region field athlete of the year and head coach Heather Kreier was named west region coach of the year. Hacker, a junior from Gig Harbor, had a short but successful indoor season. In three meets Hacker threw over 50 feet in the weight throw, topped by a 51-3½ effort at the Husky Classic in Seattle. Hacker’s season best throw hit the provisional mark for the NCAA Division III national meet and ranks her 24th nationally. Along with her success indoors Hacker is very competitive in the outdoor season as well. She competed in the hammer throw at last spring’s NCAA Outdoor Championships. For fourth-year head coach Heather Kreier this was the second time she’s received west region coach of the year honors, the other being in 2005 when Kreier coached Megan Wochnick to All-American honors in the weight throw. This season there were a handful of notable performances on the women’s team, highlighted by Hacker in the weight throw.
