Northwest Conference Meet This Weekend

THIS WEEK: The Pacific Lutheran track and field team will compete at the Northwest Conference Championships this weekend. The two-day meet is being hosted by George Fox and will take place Friday and Saturday.

PLU INVITE: Despite very warm conditions, several athletes were able to keep their cool and set some impressive marks at the Pacific Lutheran Invitational held last Saturday at the PLU campus track. PLU freshman Isaac Moog won three events, starting with a victory in the 400-meter dash in a personal best time of 49.49. Moog followed up that performance with a 22.89 run in the 200-meter dash. Off the track, Moog won the long jump with a 21-4 effort. Winding up the day, the freshman from Centralia anchored the winning 4x400 relay team. The only other multi-event winner was Saint Martin’s Sam Washington who won the shot put with a heave of 50-08, along with taking the discus with a 143-04 mark. In one of the first events of the day Sarna Becker of Club Northwest won the women’s 3000-meter steeplechase in a time of 10:46.14. Becker was aiming for a USA Olympic Trials B standard of 10:20 but came up short. Other top PLU marks include Taylor Hacker’s toss of 171-05 in the hammer throw, only two inches short of the school record. Lakia Arceneaux ran a season best time in both the 100 and the 200, running 12.76 and 26.22.

NWC PREVIEW: With the Northwest Conference Championships quickly approaching the PLU teams are hoping for improvement from last year's performance. The women’s team has a strong veteran core, led by Taylor Hacker in the throws and Faven Araya in the hurdles. Other strong returnees include Amy LeBrun, Karin Hatch, and Lauren McDonald. Top newcomers include freshman Lakia Arceneaux, who is quickly making a name for herself in the sprints, and first-year distance ace Jillian Bartling, who should shake things up in the 10,000. The women’s team placed sixth at last year's conference meet, but all signs point to a much improved showing this time around.

MEN’S PREVIEW: The Chicago Bulls had Michael Jordan, the Green Bay Packers had Brett Favre, and the 2008 PLU men’s track and field team has Isaac Moog. Junior hurdler and sprinter Luke Weinbrecht is questionable because of a hamstring injury, leaving Moog as the only remaining Lute who ranks in the top 10 in the NWC best marks list. The freshman from Centralia came to PLU to play football and hadn’t competed in track for years. Moog is ranked first in the 400, sixth in the long jump and triple jump, and seventh in the 200. The PLU men's team finished seventh out of eight schools in last year's meet, and their chances of improving on last year's finish will mostly rely on the performance of Moog. The Lutes are hoping, additionally, that some of the seven qualifiers, in addition to three non-qualifying "wild card" entries, can pick up a point or two in various events.

PROVISIONAL MARKS: This season, juniors Faven Araya and Taylor Hacker have both hit the NCAA Division III national provisional qualifying mark in their respective events. Araya is currently ranked sixth in the 400-meter hurdles, with three of the five athletes ahead of her hailing from the Northwest Conference. Hacker is currently ranked second in the hammer throw. Both Araya and Hacker qualified and competed in the national meet last spring, both coming up short of advancing to the finals in their events.

RECORDS BOOK: Most track and field all-time lists go 10 deep, but here at PLU the lists dive a little deeper, 25 deep to be exact. A handful of athletes have produced marks that made the top 25 lists this season.
