Araya Improves on NCAA Provisional Mark
in 400-Meter Hurdles
THIS WEEK: The Pacific Lutheran track and field
team will compete at the Willamette Last Chance Meet on Thursday.
The meet gets underway at 4 p.m.
LAST WEEK: This past weekend the PLU thinclads
competed at the Ken Shannon/Ken Foreman Invitational at Husky Stadium.
The meet, co-hosted by Seattle Pacifc Unviersity and the University
of Washington, honored the legendary former coaches at each school,
Ken Foreman and Ken Shannon. Faven Araya highlighted the meet as
she improved on her provisional mark in the 400-meter hurdles with
a 1:02.14 performance. Araya’s time was a lifetime best and
is currently the second fastest NCAA Division III mark in the nation.
Lakia Arceneaux also posted a lifetime best in the long jump, 16-7,
and she notched a solid 34-5 1/2 in her first effort in the triple
jump. Lexie Miller shattered her own school record in the 3000-meter
steeplechase, finishing in a time of 11:30.73. On the men’s
side Colton Oliphant threw a personal best 145-0 in the hammer throw,
moving the senior onto the all-time top 25 list.
NATIONAL RANKINGS: With one meet left on the schedule
PLU has two athletes who have essentially punched their tickets
to the NCAA Division III national meet. Faven Araya is currently
ranked second in the 400-meter hurdles and Taylor Hacker sits in
eighth in the hammer throw. Neither athlete has met the automatic
mark, but their provisional marks are high enough to ensure they’ll
be selected to compete at nationals. Over the years PLU has had
over 100 athletes earn All-American honors in track and field, but
the Lutes have been in a slump the past few years. The last All-American
produced by the PLU track program was in 2005 when now assistant
coach Dan Haakenson placed seventh in the hammer throw. With Araya
and Hacker both ranked in the top eight the chances of PLU chalking
up two more All-Americans to the list looks good.
RECORDS BOOK: Most track and field all-time lists
go 10 deep, but here at PLU the lists dive a little deeper, 25 deep
to be exact. A handful of athletes have produced marks that made
the top 25 lists this season.
