| In
the past seven years, Pacific Lutheran has compiled
three seasons with at least 20 wins, along the way
winning Northwest Conference championships in 1999,
2004 and 2006. It's clear that the Pacific Lutheran
volleyball program has a good thing going.
PLU volleyball has shown continued improvement
since the early 1990s. After the 1994 team took
a big jump with 19 wins, the 1995 Lutes became the
first PLU squad since 1988 to win 20 matches in
a season. The 1999 Lutes finished with a 20-6 record,
won the Northwest Conference title and advanced
to the second round of the national tournament before
being eliminated.
The 2003 team compiled a 21-5 record and set a
new standard for winning percentage with an .808
mark. The 17-7 record in 2004 included the Lutes'
second conference title and another journey to the
second round of the national tournament. The 2006
team again won 20 matches, finishing 20-7 and reaching
the first round of the NCAA Division III national
tournament.
In 11 seasons at PLU, head coach Kevin
Aoki has compiled a 179-106 win-loss
record, has three times been named the Northwest
Conference Coach of the Year (1999, 2004 and 2006),
and in 2004 was selected as the AVCA West Region
Coach of the Year. His .628 winning percentage ranks
him 47th on the list of active NCAA Division III
coaches. Aoki's resume also includes 12 years of
successful coaching at the high school level.
