TACOMA, WA – Pacific Lutheran kept a couple
of streaks alive on Sunday in defeating the visiting Lewis &
Clark Pioneers, 2-0, in a Northwest Conference women’s soccer
match played at the PLU field.
First, the Lutes notched their fourth consecutive
shutout, including two in conference play. The other streak belongs
to freshman midfielder Jenny McKinsey who scored both goals for
the Lutes. She has now scored the last five consecutive PLU goals.
McKinsey’s first tally came at 11:48 when
she tapped in Christina McDuffie’s cross from close range.
McKinsey ran unmarked behind several Lewis & Clark defenders,
who followed another PLU player in the box. With the game still
very much in doubt, McKinsey made the score 2-0 at the 86:15 mark.
From the right side, Jackie Oehmcke hit a diagonal ball to the
left side of the penalty area. McKinsey hit the ball with her
left foot back across the goal and into the right side of the
net.
Pacific Lutheran trailed in shots at the intermission,
6-5, but finished with a 17-9 advantage while forcing Nora Germano
to make nine saves.
After surviving an early blitz that saw Lewis &
Clark take three shots in the first 2:45 of the match, the PLU
defense settled down and limited the Pioneers to just nine total
shots. Lute goalkeeper Alyssa Blackburn made three saves to record
her second shutout of the season.
With the victory, the Lutes improve to 5-1 overall
and 2-0 in the Northwest Conference. The loss drops Lewis &
Clark to 2-4 overall and 0-2 in the conference.
