TACOMA, Wash. – George Fox weathered a furious Pacific Lutheran
offensive attack in the second 10-minute overtime period and the
two squads ended up finishing with a 0-0 tie in a Northwest Conference
women’s soccer match played Sunday at the PLU field.
After 90 minutes of regulation play and the first 10 minutes of
overtime, the Lutes (10-4-2 overall, 7-3-2 NWC) had their best scoring
chances in the second overtime period. About 103 minutes into the
match George Fox goalkeeper Jessica Cardwell made two outstanding
saves within a few seconds of each other. First, she stopped a shot
by Jenny McKinsey,
and then she knocked away the rebound effort by Christina
McDuffie. Cardwell made one more save in the overtime period
and ended up with 10 for the match.
Neither team put much pressure on the other during the first 90
minutes of the match. Pacific Lutheran had 12 shots, but all of
Cardwell’s five saves were routine. The same was true for
PLU keeper Alyssa Blackburn
who had three easy saves on a total of seven shots by the Bruins.
The Lutes ended up with 10 of their 22 total shots in overtime,
while George Fox (5-9-2 overall, 3-7-2 NWC) managed just one additional
shot in overtime and finished with eight total efforts at the goal.
PLU also had 11 corner kicks to just two for the Bruins, but the
Lutes were unable to take advantage of that statistic.
Pacific Lutheran returns to action next weekend, hosting Whitman
on Saturday at 11 a.m. in a Northwest Conference match.
