WOMEN’S SOCCER: Lutes End Season on a Sour Note

LUTES SWEPT BY OREGON TEAMS: The Pacific Lutheran University women’s soccer team ended their season with a pair of losses to Willamette University and Linfield College. After beating Willamette earlier in the season the Lutes fell to the Bearcats 1-0. The game's only goal was scored by Jessica Lammers just 3:37 into the game on a volley shot, as she received a pass from Susan Butler, who received an assist on the play. Willamette out shot PLU, 12-9 overall, including 8-2 in the first half. The Bearcats held a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks and a slim 4-3 edge in shots on goal. Nicole Reoder led the Lutes in shots with three while goalkeeper Aylssa Blackburn made three saves. The next day the Lutes were shutout by Linfield College 3-0. Linfield scored twice in the first 15 minutes and controlled the first half, but PLU dominated everything but the scoreboard in the rain- and wind-swept second half. Almost the entire second half was played on Linfield’s half of the field, but PLU’s aggressive offense ultimately cost the Lutes. PLU led Linfield in second-half shots, 12-0, until the final 1:23, when Linfield scored the final goal. The loss dropped PLU to 8-6-2 in conference play and 11-7-2 overall.

SEASON RECAP: With a fifth place finish in the Northwest Conference the Lutes had many highlights despite finishing in the middle of the pack. The most impressive team performance was when the Lutes beat the undefeated Willamette Bearcats in early October. Sitting at 10-0 the Bearcats were ranked 5th in the nation and were expecting to cruise by the Lutes but a goal by Junior forward Brittney Beitel and a strong showing by PLU’s defense proved too much for Willamette. Every one of PLU’s 11 victories came by way of shutout with the Lutes outscoring opponents 24-15. Along with great team performance there were a few individuals who stood out this season. Senior goalkeeper Aylssa Blackburn was on pace to set the school record for goals against average in a single season, but a goal scored by Willamette brought her season average to 0.28, just .004 off the school record of 0.24 held by Gail Stenzel set in 1987. Jenny McKinsey led the Lutes in scoring this season with nine goals. Sophomore Christina McDuffie led the team in assists with three on the season.
