Pacific Lutheran, Augsburg Tie 1-1 in Women’s Soccer

Cheryl Burris - scores first goal

Box Score

PARKLAND, Wash. – Pacific Lutheran University and Augsburg College battled through two overtimes before finishing with a 1-1 draw in a non-conference women’s soccer match played Friday afternoon at the PLU soccer field.

After a scoreless first half, the Lutes (0-2-1) took a 1-0 lead at 62:30 when freshman Cheryl Burris scored her first collegiate goal, heading a long pass from Courtney Walker over the head of Augsburg goalkeeper Maggie DeGroot.

The Auggies (1-1-1) got the tying score at 80:47 when Kristi Castelic slotted a penalty kick to the lower right part of the goal following a hand ball in the penalty area. Castelic got the opportunity when Kelsey Watsabaugh’s corner kick sailed over the head of PLU keeper Amanda Tschauner, forcing Lute defender Monica Beard to use her hand to prevent the ball from going into the net. Beard received a red card, and Castelic following with the tying goal.

Both teams managed two shots during the 20 minutes of overtime, but neither could score the deciding goal.

The match was close throughout as the host Lutes managed 12 shots, one more than the visiting Auggies. Augsburg enjoyed a 5-2 corner kick advantage, and both goalkeepers finished with six saves.

Pacific Lutheran returns to action at 11 a.m. Sunday when it hosts Cal Lutheran in another non-conference match.
