No. 4-Ranked Loggers Defeat Pacific Lutheran,
3-0, in Women's Soccer
Box Score
Puget Sound limited host Pacific Lutheran to just two shots as
the Loggers rolled to a 3-0 Northwest Conference women’s
soccer victory on Wednesday afternoon.
The Loggers, ranked No. 4 in the NSCAA Division III national
poll, improved their overall record to 7-0 and their Northwest
Conference mark to 3-0, while the Lutes fell to 2-4-1 overall
and 1-2 in the conference.
Puget Sound opened the scoring at 27:25 when Kelly Anderson drilled
a shot past PLU keeper Amanda Tschauner and into the far site
of the net. Anderson, positioned on the right side, took a long
cross-field pass from Melissa Abellanida and drilled her first
goal of the season. Anderson was in on the second goal, this time
assisting on Fiona Gornick’s goal at 41:48. The tally was
Gornick's fourth goal of the season. The Loggers had two more
good chances in the first half but Adrienne Folsom hit first the
left post, then the right post, with shots.
The final goal came at 78:07 when Janece Levien, the Loggers’
leading scorer, tallied her ninth goal of the season with the
Gornick getting the assist.
On the other end of the field, the Puget Sound held the Lutes
without a shot during the entire first half. PLU had its best
scoring opportunity early in the second half when Christina McDuffie
beat a UPS defender to the ball, but her first-time volley sailed
over the crossbar.
Both teams return to action with road matches this weekend, the
Lutes facing the Pacific Boxers at noon on Saturday and the Loggers
taking on the Linfield Wildcats at noon on Sunday.
