FOREST GROVE - Kelli Ganiko's second half goal made Pacific a
winner in their first match on their new home field Saturday as
the Boxers picked up a 2-1 victory over Pacific Lutheran in Northwest
Conference women's soccer action at Lincoln Park Stadium.
Ganiko connected for the winning goal in the 68th minute. Allysa
Omana gave Ganiko an arching pass into the middle of the field,
lining Ganiko up from eight yards out.
The Lutes out-shot the Boxers, 17-16, and Pacific held a 5-4 advantage
on corner kicks.
Pacific's Ashley Kanda earned the distinction of scoring the first
goal on the new field. She connected for her second goal of the
year in the seventh minute when she took a breakaway pass from
Meghan Fredette behind PLU goalie Amanda Tschauner, going from
the right side to the left corner of the net.
The Lutes (2-5-1, 1-3-0 NWC) came out strong in the second half
and finally broke through in the 62nd minute when Melissa Buitrago
put a shot into the left corner of the net off of Monica Beard's
assist. The strike made up for a penalty kick that Buitrago missed
wide early in the half.
Pacific goalkeeper Sydney Vincent made a season-high 10 saves
in the victory, while Tschauner made four stops in goal for the
Lutes.
