PARKLAND, Wash. – Pacific Lutheran and Whitman battled
to a 1-1 double-overtime tie in a Northwest Conference women’s
soccer match played Sunday afternoon at the PLU field.
Both goals came in the second half, with the Lutes getting on
the scoreboard first at 63:26 on Monica Beard’s second tally
of the season. Beard was in the right spot when a Whitman defender
headed Christina McDuffie’s shot off the line. The ball
bounced to Beard, and she fired a shot past Whitman keeper Courtney
Porter and into the left side of the net.
As they had the previous day against Whitworth, however, the
Lutes were unable to hold onto the lead as the Missionaries scored
at 82:37 with Corina Gabbert doing the honors. Like Beard, Gabbert
was in the right place following a goal mouth scramble, hitting
a first-time shot past Amanda Tschauner for the goal.
The match was evenly played as Whitman finished with 13 shots
and three corner kicks to 11 shots and three corner kicks for
the host Lutes. Both goalkeepers were busy as Tschauner finished
with eight saves while Porter ended up with seven.
With the tie, Pacific Lutheran is now 2-6-2 for the season and
1-4-1 in the Northwest Conference. Whitman is 3-4-3 overall and
2-2-2 in conference matches.
Both teams return to action at noon next Saturday, the Lutes
hosting Willamette and Whitman traveling to Spokane to face Whitworth.
