WOMEN'S TENNIS: Lutes Look Sharp, Start
Season With Two Big Wins
THIS WEEK: The Pacific Lutheran women’s
tennis team will host Willamette at 1 p.m. Saturday. Sunday, the
Lutes will travel across town to take on Puget Sound at 11 a.m.
IN CASE OR RAIN: Should it rain, Pacific Lutheran
tennis matches may be moved to an indoor location. That situation
will be in effect throughout the season, and given Pacific Northwest
weather may happen more often than not.
LUTES SWEEP OREGON SCHOOLS: The Lutes won their
first two matches of the season in dominating fashion. The Lutes
started off the season with a 9-0 romp over Pacific. The Lutes,
who return most of the top players from the team that finished second
in the Northwest Conference tournament a year ago, took advantage
of an inexperienced and overmatched Pacific team to win every singles
match in straight sets. In the six matches, the Lutes lost only
15 total games. The following day PLU beat Lewis & Clark in
convincing fashion with another 9-0 sweep. These two wins were both
Northwest Conference matches which places the Lutes on top in a
three way tie for first with Puget Sound and Linfield.
HEAD COACH: Janel McFeat, a four-time All-Northwest
Conference player at Pacific Lutheran, is in her third year as head
coach at her alma mater. As Janel Broderson, she played No. 1 singles
for 3 1/2 seasons from 1996-99, compiling a 54-32 record in singles
play. She had 18-win seasons as a junior and senior. Her career
doubles record was 53-21. McFeat served as Pacific Lutheran women's
tennis assistant coach in 2000. She is employed as a social worker
and is married to PLU alum Ian McFeat.
