Wood Named PLU Women’s Tennis Interim
Head Coach
Lorrie Wood, who has been playing or teaching tennis for 29 years,
has been named the interim head coach of the Pacific Lutheran University
women’s tennis team. Wood steps in for Janel McFeat, who resigned
after five years as the head coach.
Wood, a resident of Fox Island, played tennis at Green River Community
College in 1979-80 and at the University of Washington from 1980-82.
She earned one varsity letter during the 1982 season as a member
of the Husky women’s tennis team.
Wood has been an assistant coach with the Gig Harbor High School
boys tennis program since 2005, at the same time serving as the
Fox Island summer junior tennis program’s head instructor.
“We are happy to have Lorrie join the PLU athletic family
as the interim women’s tennis coach,” PLU athletic director
Laurie Turner said. She added that the school would begin a search
for a head coach in the spring of 2008.
McFeat led the Lutes to a 56-44 dual match record from 2003-07,
including a 14-7 overall record and fourth-place finish at the 2007
Northwest Conference tournament. PLU’s best season under McFeat
came in 2006 when the Lutes were 16-7 in dual matches and lost to
Linfield in the conference tournament championship match. She was
an all-conference tennis player at Pacific Lutheran from 1996-99,
compiling a 53-21 singles record.
“This was one of the hardest decisions I have ever had to
make,” McFeat said, citing a new baby and family responsibilities
as the reason for her resignation. “I will miss PLU and cherish
the wonderful memories.”
