Jessica Baldwin - Digital Media Portfolio

»  I am very involved in service because I feel that as a society we have forgotten about our poor, our hungry, and those in need.  When I was little I learned this first hand when my family or my friends famlies went through tough times.  I wish that someone would have helped my family when we were struggling or that someone would have cared or told me it was not my fault.   My family like most of my friends families did not know where to turn. This frustrated me for a long time because as a child it is hard to understand why you do not have nice clothes or eat as well as your peers.  This is why I am so passionate about service, I never want another kid to go thorough that.  When my family was doing better I made it my goal to reach out to as many people as possible who need help and show them I care.  One person can make a difference in someone’s life.

Who I volunteer with

» Circle K:
Pacific Lutheran University Circle K meets every Wednesday at 5:30pm in UC 210. During our meetings we discuss up coming service event, have socials to get to know our fellow volunteers, and do service projects.   As Vice President of service for Pacific Lutheran University Circle K I try to set up at least one service project per week, I coordinate the volunteers that go to these service projects and arrange for transportation.  I also design the monthly calendar that contains meeting times, service events, and other valuable information.

» Harstad Hall:  
With Harstad Hall I have volunteered at Tacoma Outreach and in Back into the Streets which was coordinated by the Volunteer Center and Circle K.

 » History 253:
For History 253 there is a service learning requirement.  To fulfill this I volunteered with FISH Food Bank in Edgewood, WA thru Circle K for a minimum of 20 hours.  I helped those in need collect groceries and made them fill like it was okay and not to be ashamed because they were going to a food bank.  While volunteering I interviewed those that come to the food bank and my fellow volunteers.  With this information and research I have done on the history of food banks I am in the process of writing a research paper for this history class.
