How would you make Tacoma better? I would make Tacoma better by making it a safer place to for the youth and people to hang out in and having a variety of recreational activities. Is Tacoma a place where servant leadership is alive? No, because Tacoma has such a high violence rating. If the community became more involved and had more service-orientated programs, then it would keep more kids off of the streets. Savannah Warren What makes Tacoma a good place to live? I love the downtown area, especially how they are renovating it, and especially older places such as The Washington History museum and the Rialto Theater. What are some assets of Tacoma? Tacoma assets are that it has institutions of higher education, such as University of Puget Sound, Pacific Lutheran and the new UW-Tacoma. How would you make Tacoma better? I would make Tacoma better by cleaning up some of the lower income areas and parks around the community. Is Tacoma a place where servant leadership is alive? Somewhat, as the YMCA, Big brother, and Big Sister programs are doing what they can to improve the community, yet I feel there could be more leadership and volunteer programs throughout Tacoma. It is by a large body of water, close to one of the biggest cities in the Northwest, and has other numerous activities one could fulfill in. How would you make Tacoma better? I would put more money into the youth programs if Tacoma to help more youth stay on track. Is Tacoma a place where servant leadership is alive? Yes, there are numerous institutions that are geared to helping people get out of certain situations and for having a better life. Project 5.0 Needs Assessments Why conduct a needs assessment? How will you use the information collected? It is important to conduct a needs assessment because it enables leisure professionals or those interested in starting their own program, such as my own, to seek out participant and citizen input about programming ideas, desires, and needs of various constituent groups. I will use the information collected by seeing what residents in the area feel is missing from their community. By being able to have a recreational program that fulfills needs, and desires of the surrounding community will not only be beneficial for my program but for the area as well. Beyond the information collected in the two worksheets listed above, what additional information do you need to know about your target market (e.g. demographic data, current activity involvement, needs and skills involvement, etc.) to complete the needs assessment process? I need to know the main age group of my area and what they could use. In Tacoma, teenagers and 18-30 yr. olds make up a huge part of the population. In knowing this I would want to base programs that these age groups would be interested in. I think that by getting more teenagers involved in recreational activities would not only keep more kids off of the streets but would also help lower the crime rate of Tacoma and the surrounding areas. How will you collect the information you listed in Question 1 of this list? What information will you get directly from your target market and what information will you have to find other places? Where will you have to look for some information? I will collect the information that I listed in question 1 of this list by data gathering in where I will first need to look at the demographic area of Tacoma. In gathering the data I will need to look at four things: comparative inventories, environmental resources, social indicators, and social values. Comparative inventories are identifying and counting the physical resources and parks, recreation and leisure programs in a variety of communities. Environmental resources is taking an inventory of community resources that can help programs get a feel for open space, facilities and programs that are missing and or needed in the community. Social indicators are pieces of data that are typically gathered and maintained by governmental or nonprofit agencies, such as juvenile arrest rates, mortality and birth rates, population and age group information, etc., which will all be a factor in designing a program that is needed in the community. Social values are the social mores and values of the community, which will be important in designing a recreational program. When will you collect information and who will use the information once you have collected it? How will you use the information to aid in program design? I will collect the information by using the four sources, comparative inventories, environmental resources, social indicators, and social values.
