Program Plan

 Alpine Course

When thinking of a program to design I thought of the various recreational activities the Tacoma area has and the programs that are needed. Fifteen percent of Tacoma's population ranges from the ages 18-25. This age group have a few recreational opportunities, yet there are many other programs which are needed.

The course will cover material on crevasse rescue, rope and travel, survival skills, First Aid, CPR, basic mountaineering skills, and navigation. Along with seven weekend outings and a two-day climb of Mt. Rainier at completion.

Ice Axe

The Sponsoring Organization will be through the Tacoma Mountaineers. Currently, the Tacoma Mountaineers have an alpine course, however, they do not have a program which is geared to a specific age group, let alone an eight-week course.

Program Visions

The visions that I hope to achieve through my program are:

Provide a program for young adults to engage in, through the resources the Northwest have to offer.

Provide an insight on the outdoors and an awareness on the alpine environment

Provide them with an education of how important recreation is in one's life and the benefits of staying active.

Climbers in the Alps

"The experienced mountain climber is not intimidated by a mountain, he is inspired by it. The persistent winner is not discouraged by a problem, he is challenged by it. Mountains are created to be conquered; adversities are designed to be defeated; problems are sent to be solved. It is better to master one mountain than a thousand foot hills."
