Extracurricular Activities

I am a very creative person and enjoy activites that allow me to express my ideas.  Just to name a few are: traveling, scrap-booking, writing poems and short stories, and volunteering.  These are a way to express my self besides verbally.

Some of my favorite sports are tennis, karate, and dancing.

Traveling

I have traveled to several different states in the United States.  During spring break my Junior year in High School I traveled along the entire east coast states with a few of my High School classmates and seniors from another High School.  We were able to see a broadway play, tour George Town, Harvard University, historical buildings, museums, and several other buildings. In order for us to plan our trip we had to go through travel agents, figure the number of people, amount of money per person, and had self-directed decision making.  So, at the end it  was worth the work and patience that gave us a sence of freedom to do what we wanted, enjoy fun activities, and beautiful scenery.  It was amazing what I was able to see all within one week.

I have been in the southern hot state of Arizona where my Grandmother lives and we went to a cactus nursery and saw a whole variety of cactuses that I could not even imagine or believe my eyes.  I have also been to foreign countries, which my family tends to go to Canada almost every year.  My favorite place is Victoria and I love the Victorian era and eating during high-tea time.

When I was in eight grade I went to the Philippines with my Grandmother for a month and a half.  Even though I missed school and my family at home, I still had to do homework but mine was to learn and gain knowlegde about the culture, weather, climate, geographics, languages, economy, my family history, and etc in the Philippines. So, I kept a journal and brough back different type of souvenirs, took pictures of the beautiful scenery, and cut articles out of the newspaper. I found it to be a wonderful experience for me to see my family, especially my Great Grandmother. Going to foreign countries I was able to open my mind to different life perspectives and view alternative lifestyles and gain unique experiences, which is a great learning tool for anyone.

Volunteering

I have always volunteered since I was a little girl.  My mother was the first person I followed; because where ever she volunteered or helped I would try to help in any way I could, too.  I never can stop volunteering, even if is just a little bit of my time as a busy person.  The number one thing about volunteering is that anybody can do it no matter who you are, which means that you don’t have to be a specialist or need a certain talent.  There are no requirements but to be there on time and do your work.  When ever I volunteer it makes me feel better about myself and the others that I helped, because you are making a difference.  Also people that volunteer show how they care for other people besides themselves and not self-centered.  I feel like a hero or hope to inspire and become an example for others.

I have volunteer at several events and in various clubs and organizations, such as the Olympic College Chapter “Beta Gamma Eta” of Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society (PTK), Girl Scouts, my church and other school events.  My volunteering skills vary from decorating conference rooms to tutoring other students.  Volunteering is one of the easiest things that I can adapt to no matter where I go.  Sometimes it may be hard to move away from your family and friends, because you have to adjust and change to another environment, home, and neighbors in your new neighborhood, especially out of state but not volunteering.  So, my key word for volunteering is “anybody,” because remember anybody can volunteer and all that it takes is some of your time.

Poems & Short Stories

I love to write poems and short stories, because I am able to find a different way to express my self and feelings verses when I verbally communicate with other people about my ideas, thoughts, or interest, and even how my day went.  One of the great things about poems is that they don’t have to rhyme either but many people think they do.  One of my poems is titled “Dance of Life”.
