After acceptance into the school of nursing here at PLU, all students were required to preform several tasks before starting school. We had to complete all immunizations, complete a CPR class and become certified, as well as show proof of health insurance. After beginning school, we had to complete a HIPPA certification course, pass the Put it ALL Together Day, as well as complete an HIV/AIDS class and pass a dosage test. Each one of these requirements ensured we were practicing responsibly as individuals. The Put it All Together Day ensured that we knew the foundations of basic care, and by passing the test we showed that we are competent in giving that care.

This class consisted of working in groups and it became important when deciding who was responsible for what. In this class, lecture consisted of many responsibility discussions. The law determines what nurses are accountable for whether on the job or not. The Code of Ethics and the Social Policy Statement are both statements that nurses are responsible for outside of work and types of responsibilities we hold to our entire community. The Nurse Practice Act is individualized for each state and is extremely important in determining what a nurse is responsible for, while the Scopes and Standards of Practice are individual for each type of nursing. Delegation was also discussed in this class, along with repercussions of not being responsible such as malpractice.

Meeting objectives and reflection

Being responsible and accountable is always vital to nursing care. In order to provide care competently, responsibility and accountability must always be taken into consideration. As our clinical experience begins to expand, more responsibility will be proportional.
