Provide evidence-based clinically competent care

» Nursing 220
Nursing 220 was a class which provides beginning nurses with the basic set of skills needed to competently care for patients. The first half of the class was lab in which we practiced and learned the importance of the skills and then were tested to ensure we were safe to practice beyond mannequins. In the second half of the class, we were distributed among four long term care facilities in the Tacoma area. Here I was assigned one patient specifically at the beginning and when I was comfortable I received several patients at one time. Here I preformed basic care, such as bed baths and dental hygiene, and vital signs. I also preformed different assessments on patients here such as the functional and geriatric assessment scales. My complete set of skills can be found on my Clinical Skills Checklist. We also had the chance to visit an adult day facility, where care was provided to the young as well as the elderly. A complete list of all the patients i have provided competent care for up to this point in my schooling can be found on my Record of Clinical Practice.

In most of health promotion, information we have been studying has been researched and evidence based. The teacher for the health promotion portion of this class focuses on research that has been conducted and how we can apply the information to our own patients and everyday situations. Although it has not been a focus of this class, the teacher relies heavily on evidence based care, and it therefore is incorporated into our learning.

This very labor intensive class has provided vital information on the body's physiological processes and how they work. It focused mainly on the etiology, manifestations, physiology, and treatment on specific diseases important in the health care field. All the disease have been researched and this information has allowed us not only to understand the body, but the best way to go about treatment with evidence based practical knowledge. A presentation in this class that one of my groups did was on Degenerative Spine Disorders. Because low back pain is such a problem today in society, this presentation allowed us to research the topic and because of this we are now able to explain and treat this problem with evidence based care. The powerpoint on Degenerative Spine Disorder is basic information while the notes are more detailed.

Meeting Objectives and Reflection

In the few classes that we have completed, it is clear that evidence based practiced is an important part of care. It provides health care providers something to look on to understand what kinds of care work, and others that do not. In our future classes, evidence based care will be looked at much more closely and we will have more hands-on learning and more opportunity to give back to the community what we have learned.
